To create spaces where others feel seen, heard, and  valued, educators must begin with a deep  understanding of themselves.

 

​Our identities, lived experiences, and even  neurobiology shape how we show up—what we  notice, what we expect, and how we lead.

​

This session invites educators to explore how culture, identity, and neurodiversity influence not only our  perceptions of others but also our leadership  decisions.

 

Grounded in culturally responsive teaching  and the brain, we’ll explore how the brain’s threat and safety systems impact learning, connection, and belonging and how our own neurological and cultural lenses affect the spaces we create for others.​

Educators are often expected to understand their students and communities. But how often are they asked to understand themselves.

​

​This session invites educators to reflect on their own identity, neurodiversity, and internalized norms  recognizing that self-awareness is not just personal    growth; it’s imperative.

This session will establish foundational understandings of bias with a specific focus on unconscious bias and the impacts unconscious bias can have on our practice as educators.

​

Using Rosenthal and Jacobsen's (1968) study Pygmalion In The Classroom as a reference point, we will explore the role of teacher expectations on student achievement.

 

We will examine the media's role in developing our worldview and whose voice is represented in that view.

 

You will leave this session with practical strategies to reveal, disrupt and ultimately mitigate against biases that tend to occur in the classroom. As well as a deeper understanding of how bias has the potential to lead to racism.

This thought provoking session will delve into the complexities of racism and anti-racism in education. Inspired by Dr. Beverly Tatum's analogy of the walkway towards addressing racism. You will gain a foundational comprehension of how racism is deeply interwoven into society’s fabric and our education system, often concealed from view. It is this concealed nature that necessitates our active pursuit of anti-racism.

We'll embark on a journey to challenge common misconceptions like "colorblindness" and the notion of a pure meritocracy. We aim to dispel the belief that racism is a thing of the past or confined to isolated incidents of hatred. Instead, we'll cultivate a profound comprehension of its ever-present, pervasive nature that affects us all in varying, sometimes imperceptible, ways. Some may be acutely aware of its presence, while others remain oblivious.

The aim is clear: to ensure equitable treatment for all so that every child can access the same high-quality education and have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. Together, we will work towards creating a more just and inclusive educational future for all.

You'll leave with an understanding of how racism is deeply woven into society's fabric, with a focus on actively practicing anti-racism to ensure equitable treatment for all in our schools. You'll gain practical tools, knowledge, and strategies, empowering you to be a better ally to your students and colleagues.
